Module 3 ● Planning (Plan & Complete Module) (10 mins)

The Office of School and Community Partnerships at UNC Charlotte strongly believes in the power of co-planning and co-teaching and has adopted this method of collaboration as a building block in our partner schools to support the student teaching experience in the classroom. This practice allows students to see both the YLI and Clinical Educator as teachers in the classroom. Additionally, the Clinical Educator gradually releases responsibility to the YLI with both parties feeling confident in a smooth transition through co-planning and co-teaching at the onset of the experience.

During the clinical experience portion of the YLI, you and your YLI will focus on planning and how your lesson plans are developed within the context of your school, grade level, content, etc.

You will want to focus on the following with your YLI:

  • Writing student focused and standards focused lesson plans that include:
    • Accommodations/Modifications (AIG, IEP, 504)
    • Differentiation for all students (ex: struggling readers, students who have demonstrated mastery of the content, etc.)
    • Aligned assessments (exit tickets, formal and informal assessments, etc.)
    • Prior knowledge and skills of students
    • “Assets” the students bring (cultural, community, and personal)
    • Essential Literacy Skill(s) if applicable

Model Planning

During this clinical experience semester, your YLI will have clinical experiences that he or she will need to complete. One great way to support the YLI is to model how you plan. If you are unable to do this with yourYLI due to time constraints, here are some alternatives that we suggest to support theYLI.

Alternative Model Planning Supports:

As you plan the lessons that you will teach to your students, we ask that you talk your YLI through what you are doing and why you are doing it. This way students have an understanding of the lesson and how it will unfold.

When theYLI comes to observe, give him/her your lesson plans to review during instructional delivery so that theYLI can see the lesson plan “come to life.”

Co-planning

Once you have done some model planning, we strongly encourage you to do some co-planning with your YLI. There are two suggested models that can be used for co-planning based on your YLI’s needs. These include “One Plans, One Assists” and “Partner Planning.”

Your YLI may have assignments in coursework that require teaching lessons with your students. The YLI candidate can begin planning the entire lesson and get feedback from the Clinical Educator prior to teaching the lesson (One plans, One assists) to support their growth in planning. We ask that you use your knowledge of effective lesson planning as well as the lens of edTPA planning to give your YLI very specific and actionable feedback regarding these lesson plans.

As a reminder, here are the edTPA focal points:

  • Writing lesson plans focused on students and standards that include:
    • Accommodations/Modifications (AIG, IEP, 504)
    • Differentiation for all students (ex: struggling readers, students who have demonstrated mastery of the content, etc.)
    • Aligned assessments (exit tickets, formal and informal assessments, etc.)
    • Prior knowledge and skills of students
    • “Assets” the students bring (cultural, community, and personal)
    • Essential Literacy Skill(s) if applicable
